American Odds: The Basics

If you're new to sports betting in Ohio, one of the first things that might trip you up is the numbers. What does -110 mean? Why does a team show +240? Is -7.5 the score or the spread? Don't worry — it's simpler than it looks.

US sportsbooks use what's called American odds, also known as moneyline odds. They're always displayed with a plus (+) or minus (-) sign in front of a number.

  • Negative odds (e.g., -150): This means you have to bet $150 to win $100. The negative number represents the favorite — the team expected to win.
  • Positive odds (e.g., +130): This means a $100 bet wins you $130. The positive number represents the underdog — the team expected to lose.

You don't have to bet exactly $100. The math scales proportionally. Betting $50 on a +130 underdog wins you $65. Betting $75 on a -150 favorite wins you $50.

What Does -110 Mean?

You'll see -110 everywhere — it's the standard juice or vig that sportsbooks charge on point spread bets. It means you bet $110 to win $100. That extra $10 is the sportsbook's built-in margin. Over thousands of bets, that's how they make money.

Point Spreads Explained

A point spread is the sportsbook's way of leveling the playing field. If the Cleveland Browns are -6.5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, it means the Browns need to win by 7 or more for a bet on them to pay out. If you bet the Steelers +6.5, they can lose by up to 6 and you still win. The spread is all about the margin of victory, not just who wins.

Totals (Over/Under)

A total is a bet on the combined score of both teams. If the total is set at 44.5 for a Browns game, you bet whether the final combined score will be over or under that number. Both teams' scores count — it doesn't matter who wins.

How to Use This Knowledge as an Ohio Bettor

Understanding odds helps you do two things: recognize value and avoid getting taken advantage of. When you see a big favorite at -400, you know you're risking $400 to win $100 — a bet that only makes sense if you're near certain of the outcome. When you see an underdog at +300, you know a $100 bet could return $300, which might be great value if you think the game is closer than the odds suggest.

The best Ohio sportsbooks — DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and others — all display odds in this format. Once it clicks, it becomes second nature.
