Lucas Jumalon Is the 2026 World Champion of Poker

He came into the final table as the chip leader. He left as the youngest world champion in nearly two decades. On Wednesday August 5, 22-year-old Lucas Jumalon from Spokane, Washington defeated Finnish amateur Lauri Saaskilahti heads-up to win the 2026 World Series of Poker Main Event and claim the $10,000,000 first-place prize -- the most prestigious title in tournament poker.

Jumalon went wire-to-wire as the chip leader across the entire three-night ESPN finale, never surrendering the lead from the moment the final nine returned to the Horseshoe Las Vegas on August 3. At 22 years, four months, and 28 days old, he is the second-youngest Main Event champion in WSOP history -- separated from the all-time record by just a few months. The only player ever to win the Main Event younger was Joe Cada, who claimed the title just before his 22nd birthday in 2009.

Jumalon's path to the championship was a remarkable story of quantitative thinking applied to the world's most human game. A recent Grand Canyon University graduate, he entered the Main Event with approximately $180,000 in prior live tournament earnings and had been coached by CoinPoker pro and high-stakes specialist Patrick Leonard throughout his preparation. He built his chip lead methodically through the early stages of the final table, then broke the match open heads-up with two pivotal hands. On the first, he flopped top set of eights against Saaskilahti's queen-high and watched his opponent fire into him before check-folding the turn. On the second, he made a queen-high flush to pick off a massive bluff that left Saaskilahti severely short-stacked. The final hand saw a six land on both the flop and the turn to end the match in Jumalon's favor.

Saaskilahti receives $6,000,000 for second place -- far and away the largest result of his poker career and a life-changing sum for a man whose day-to-day job is head of sales at a packing company. He arrived at the final table as an amateur with just $138,000 in prior recorded cashes. The gap between first and second place -- $4,000,000 -- was the defining prize pool structure of this year's event.

Before cards went into the air for the final time, 2025 champion Michael Mizrachi passed the torch with the ceremonial shuffle up and deal -- a full-circle moment for a series that also announced Jason Koon as the lone inductee into the 2026 Poker Hall of Fame. Koon, a two-time bracelet winner and one of the most consistent high-stakes tournament players of his generation, joins the game's all-time greats in the Hall.

Benny Glaser also added to his legacy at this summer's series, winning his ninth career WSOP bracelet after beating Phil Ivey and Josh Arieh at the final table of his event. Both Shaun Deeb and Michael Mizrachi also reached nine bracelets this summer -- a remarkable milestone shared by three players simultaneously. The 57th World Series of Poker awarded all 100 scheduled bracelets and logged well over 200,000 total entries across its events at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

The WSOP Circuit continues immediately, with Harrah's Cherokee in North Carolina hosting an event running August 6 through 17 with a $2 million Main Event prize pool guarantee. NFL Preseason Is Underway -- Injuries, Big Debuts and Cowboys Drama

The 2026 NFL season is getting closer by the day and the preseason is now fully underway. The Hall of Fame Game in Canton kicked things off with Carolina Panthers quarterback Haynes King leading his team to a 33-30 win over the Arizona Cardinals in a back-and-forth opener that many are viewing as an encouraging early sign for the Panthers. The full preseason schedule is now in motion with all 32 teams set to play this week.

The biggest storylines out of training camp have been dominated by injuries and quarterback intrigue. The Detroit Lions suffered a painful double blow when starting center Cade Mays went down with a hand fracture and running back Isiah Pacheco sustained an MCL tear -- two starters lost before a single regular-season snap. The Washington Commanders lost left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a torn triceps, which will significantly affect how the offensive line protects Jayden Daniels when the season begins. Jonathan Greenard, the pass rusher the Eagles acquired in the offseason, has not yet practiced at training camp and remains on a delayed timeline.

On the more positive side of the ledger, this preseason is delivering some of the most anticipated debut performances in recent memory. Travis Hunter -- the No. 2 overall pick who won the Heisman Trophy as a two-way player at Colorado -- is making his preseason debut with the Jacksonville Jaguars and is expected to get snaps at both wide receiver and cornerback. Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick taken by the Tennessee Titans, is also playing preseason games with head coach Brian Callahan planning to use his starters in all three preseason contests. JJ McCarthy is back from the torn meniscus that wiped out his entire rookie season and is expected to play for the Minnesota Vikings, while Justin Fields gets his best opportunity yet to prove he is a legitimate NFL starter as the new quarterback for the New York Jets.

In Dallas, the Cowboys have made a significant defensive investment by signing linebacker Quinnen Williams to a new extension -- a move that signals the franchise is building the kind of two-way roster capable of competing in what many analysts are already describing as a Super Bowl window. Aaron Rodgers, now with the Cowboys, has been active in camp and the combination of Rodgers under center with a reenergized defense has Dallas generating legitimate Super Bowl conversation heading into the regular season. From a futures betting standpoint, the Cowboys are worth monitoring as a team whose current Super Bowl odds may not yet fully reflect the impact of their offseason construction.

Drake Maye, the Patriots quarterback, is unlikely to play in New England's preseason opener against the Colts. The NBA also announced its Tip-Off and Christmas Day schedules this week, giving basketball fans their first look at the marquee matchups of the coming season -- including LeBron James returning to Los Angeles on Christmas Day in what promises to be one of the most-watched games of the entire year.

MLB: Second Half Heating Up -- Tigers Surge, Dodgers Lead, Brewers Contend

The MLB second half is three weeks old and the playoff picture is starting to come into sharp focus. The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to hold the best record in baseball, though Shohei Ohtani's pitching return timeline remains a source of caution. Ohtani is active and productive as a hitter but the two-way production that made him the story of the first half has been limited on the mound as the team manages his left knee carefully heading toward October.

The Detroit Tigers have been the biggest surprise of the second half, winning seven of their last nine games and posting a 3.09 ERA in August -- a dramatic turnaround from a bullpen that had been a liability for much of the season. Detroit has scored eight or more runs in six of those nine wins and represents one of the most interesting live bets remaining on the AL Wild Card board. Nathan Eovaldi is sidelined with elbow inflammation while Blake Snell is set to return to the rotation Tuesday -- injury updates worth tracking across all pitching prop markets this week.

The Milwaukee Brewers remain the most compelling betting story in the National League. Milwaukee's World Series odds have been drawing attention at sportsbooks for weeks and the underlying performance numbers continue to justify the hype. The Phillies hold a wild card spot and play the Cardinals this week in a series that has legitimate October preview energy given both teams' roster construction. The Pirates' rookie Jose Valdez, who hit 12 home runs in his first 31 games, continues to be one of the most explosive young hitters in the sport and one of the best player prop bets on the board on any day he plays.
