One of the Best Weeks in Sports
The NBA Finals are set for the first time in 27 years for New York. The World Series of Poker delivered its first Cinderella story of the summer in just week one. The Vegas Golden Knights are making a mockery of the Presidents Trophy. And the Carolina Hurricanes and Montreal Canadiens are locked in one of the most entertaining conference finals series in recent memory. Here is your full recap and what to watch heading into this week.
NBA Finals Set: Knicks vs Spurs Is a 1999 Rematch -- Game 1 Wednesday
The 2026 NBA Finals will be San Antonio Spurs vs New York Knicks -- a rematch of the 1999 Finals that San Antonio won 4-1. The Spurs held off the Oklahoma City Thunder in an epic Game 7 to win the Western Conference Finals, with Victor Wembanyama providing standout two-way production to seal San Antonio's trip to the Finals. The series was a seven-game masterpiece -- Spurs 122, Thunder 115 in double overtime in Game 1; Thunder 127, Spurs 114 in Game 5 to claw back; Spurs 118, Thunder 91 in a dominant Game 6; and Spurs 111, Thunder 103 in the decisive Game 7.
The series opener was defined by Wembanyama's magnificent 41-point, 24-rebound performance -- including a 28-foot three-pointer that forced overtime -- making him the youngest player ever to record a 40-20 game in the playoffs. But the Game 7 story belonged to an unlikely hero: Julian Champagnie scored 20 points including six three-pointers in the clincher, capping what may be a fairytale career breakthrough for the 24-year-old. Rookie guard Dylan Harper also stepped up throughout the series as one of the rising stars of the entire postseason.
On the other side, the Knicks stormed through the Eastern Conference winning 11 consecutive games by an average of 23.8 points -- reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. New York has not lost a playoff game since April 23. Jalen Brunson was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP. Knicks center Mitchell Robinson is managing a broken pinky finger after recent surgery, and his effectiveness in the Finals remains to be seen.
Game 1 tips off Wednesday, June 3 at 8:30pm ET on ABC from San Antonio. The Spurs enter as -196 favorites. When the Knicks host Game 3, it will be the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden in 9,845 days -- since June 25, 1999. This series has everything: the unstoppable young big man vs the battle-tested point guard, a franchise chasing its first title in 53 years vs a program returning to the Finals for the first time in 12.
From a betting standpoint, the Spurs are significant favorites but also carry the hangover risk that comes from a seven-game war against OKC. A veteran NBA scout noted immediately after Game 7 that San Antonio may have already slayed their dragon -- and the Knicks' nine days of rest could be a meaningful early edge. The Knicks at +165 or better to win the series is a value bet worth serious consideration.
WSOP Week 1: Five Bracelets, One Cinderella Story, and a Hall of Fame Induction
The 57th World Series of Poker officially opened May 26 at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, and the first week delivered everything poker fans could ask for. Reigning WSOP Main Event champion Michael Mizrachi stepped to the microphone and delivered the phrase every poker player knows -- Shuffle Up and Deal -- to officially open the series. Minutes after the last hand was played that day, he was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
Five bracelets have been awarded across nine events through May 31, with 24,479 total entries already logged in the first six days. Here is who has taken home gold so far:
- Event 2 ($5,000 8-Handed NLH): American Daniyal Gheba won his first WSOP bracelet and $502,985. Gheba admitted after the victory that the prize money could change his life.
- Event 3 ($500 Industry Employees NLH): Poker dealer Jerome Neppl won $64,083 in just his second career recorded live cash -- his previous result was a modest $613 at a local casino just one month earlier. One month from a $613 payday to a WSOP bracelet is one of the best Cinderella stories the series has produced in years.
- Event 4 ($1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo): Jason Daly took home $191,362.
- Event 5 ($5,000 PLO): China's Yang Wang won $595,388.
- Event 6 ($1,500 Seven Card Stud): The UK's James Cheung claimed the first stud bracelet of the summer for $103,185.
The $25,000 Heads Up Championship also saw Phil Ivey and Doug Polk among the early casualties -- a reminder that even the biggest names in the game are not guaranteed a smooth run at the WSOP. The new $550 Mini Mystery Millions opener drew 1,635 entries on Day 1a alone, with Las Vegas local Jansen Satparam leading the counts at 1.8 million chips heading into Day 2.
Free daily streams are available on the WSOP YouTube channel, with ESPN taking over coverage when the Main Event begins July 2. If you want to take a shot at the WSOP yourself, satellites are running right now through WSOP Online in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Nevada. NHL: Golden Knights One Win from Historic Sweep, Hurricanes Lead Montreal 2-1
The most stunning development in the Stanley Cup Playoffs right now is in the Western Conference Finals. The Vegas Golden Knights lead the Presidents Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche 3-0 in a series that almost nobody predicted. Colorado was the consensus Stanley Cup favorite entering the postseason. Mitch Marner has been the best player in the series and Vegas has neutralized Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar in ways that suggest the result is no fluke. Game 4 is Tuesday night -- Colorado faces elimination at home and MacKinnon needs the performance of his playoff life to extend the series. A sweep of the Presidents Trophy winner would be one of the most stunning upsets in recent conference finals history.
In the East, Carolina won Games 2 and 3 in overtime after Montreal shocked the Hurricanes 6-2 in the series opener -- handing Carolina its first loss of the entire postseason and ending their bid for a perfect playoff run. The Hurricanes lead 2-1 heading into Game 4 Wednesday in Montreal at 8pm ET on TNT. Juraj Slafkovsky has been outstanding for the Canadiens and Jakob Dobes has been a revelation in goal all postseason. This series has real Game 7 potential.
What to Watch and Bet This Week
Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday is the marquee event. The Spurs are the right side on a series price but the Knicks coming in rested and red-hot make each individual game a genuine toss-up early. Focus on the first game as a standalone rather than getting locked into series futures until you see how San Antonio comes out of their emotional Game 7.
In hockey, Tuesday's Colorado-Vegas Game 4 is the most interesting spot on the board. The Avalanche are facing elimination at home with one of the best clutch performers in the history of the sport desperate to extend the series. Home teams facing elimination cover at a historically strong rate and Colorado as a live underdog deserves consideration.
